I don't really know what this is, it looks like either a huge megaphone, or
like Livi is about to written on by a really huge pencil tip!

Now, You know the drill at this point.
But, since, you might get tired of just stating your desire to have your name thrown in the pot again, how about this time around, to have your name entered into the pot again :
Comment what you had for breakfast!

For NEXT week, be thinking about your favorite holiday tradition, but we'll save the sentiments for next week and just have some fun this week!

I did not have breakfast this morning!  I don't particularly like breakfast in fact.  I really REALLY dislike bacon, and only slightly tolerate sausage.  But, I do appreciate a good waffle or pancake as long as they have no syrup on them and I in company that won't look at me like I'm an alien if I pick mine up and eat it like a piece of bread.
Though, I will say that people don't tend find my waffle/ pancake eating habits nearly as strange as when I pick up a steak and eat it the same way.  I just don't like cutting my food.

If I am going to go some where fancy, where picking up a steak and eating it by hand is unacceptable, I will have someone cut it up for me. :o)

  1. Today, well...it's a school day so breakfast was a bit boring, I had a bowl of cheerios :-) But, TGIF, so tomorrow, sourdough waffles! :-) Oh and the thread order arrived and I love it all!!!

    1. So glad you loved it!
What sets regular waffles made from store bought mix from sourdough waffles? Or are sourdough waffles available as a mix ans I just don't know it?
We tried to make some waffles from scratch.... it was not pretty. They looked and tasted like cardboard.

    2. I use my Dad's recipe and my Brother's sour dough starter...so totally made from scratch. They are super yummy and not hard at all. The basic recipe is 2 cups flour, 1/4 cup sugar, 4 tsp baking powder, 1/4 cup oil, 2 egg, 2 cups milk. I add a cup of sour dough starter to that to make sourdough waffles, but they are terrific w/out that too.

In that case, it's not very boring at all. :o)

  7. homemade granola with frozen raspberries and milk heated in the micro so the raspberries thaw and the milk is not cold. And a large glass of milk, this is my 95% breakfast. fast and quick would be graham crackers in milk.

    ReplyDelete

    1. OK, first(lol)... homemade granola, granola is a dry grain, right? So, do you grow the granola and process it, or are you saying that the dish is homemade?
I would not be surprised if you grow and pick and process the granola (or however it gets from the ground to the packages in the store), but I am just checking.
The raspberries, did you grow them and freeze them?
And do you have dairy cows?

Interestingly there are very few (maybe just you actually) people that I communicate on the regular that I would feel the need to ask these questions, but ya know.... you are you and I am inquisitive. :o)

      Delete
    2. Hi Jess, Granola is like a snack mix is made for oatmeal. We haven't grown oats for several years, once we stopped milking the dairy cows, we quite growing it. I did not grow the raspberries, my ground is sandy and dries out easily and I have to compete with the cows if I want to water the garden. and string hoses out about 600 feet from the barn to the garden area. The milk is store bought, we stopped milking cows about 10 years ago. all the kids left and farmguy just had too much to do with the field work so he switched to beef cattle. We started milking in 1977 and I helped milk until 2000 when my back just wouldn't take it any more. Farmguy tried to be a superman and do it all, but he had to admit that the dairy equipment was wearing out and so was he. We still grow corn, soybeans, wheat & alfalfa.

My granola recipe uses oatmeal (old fashioned or quick cooking) brown sugar, a touch of butter, ground nuts (walnuts & pecans) and raisins or cranberries. I skipped the fruit as I add the frozen. The granola is mixed together and baked in the oven. when cooled you break it up in bits and eat it. It is good by it self too. I don't have the recipe here at work.

I don't think I've ever eaten at Waffle House.
Are they still a cash only establishment? It was their well known cash only policy that deterred me from going. I'm just young enough to have never carried cash. Once I got to the age of working for my own money, stores were accepting ATM cards at the register. So, I've always had a debit card. :o)

  11. Congrats to Shannon!

This is fun. I had oatmeal with chia seeds (for extra protein, since I'm a vegetarian, and also they're high in essential fatty acids), with a dash of vanilla, pomegranate seeds, honey, nutmeg, and cloves. It was pretty good, but I think next time I'll see how it is without the nutmeg and cloves; they were maybe just a bit too much. And a large mug of tea to drink. Oh yeah, and a tablespoon of molasses-- I have that every morning because it's a good vegetarian source of iron.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I will have to check into the chia business that you and Neeneral speak of. :o)

I agree this is fun. I feel like I am learning all sorts of new stuff.

I've never had molasses, I just know it's thick.
      I've smelt clove cigars... STINKY!
Nutmeg? I don't know even know what that is. lol
      :o)
A large mug of tea? You have the large mug of tea with molasses every morning, or just the molasses every morning and then drink the tea throughout the day?

      Delete
    2. Oh, I just take the molasses straight, before breakfast, then wash it down with a glass of water. Molasses is yummy as a cookie flavoring, but I have to admit it's a bit strong by itself, so I just swallow it quickly. I've been trying to cut back on caffeine, too, so now I just have tea at breakfast time, but I used to drink it all day long!

I'm sure you've had nutmeg and cloves before. They're some of those spices that tend to go with cinnamon and allspice that are often used in holiday cakes and cookies, mulled cider, pumpkin pie, etc. It's the cigar that stinks, not the cloves!

You can buy chia seeds in bulk at a health food store. They don't have a particular flavor, and when mixed with liquids they become somewhat gelatinous, so they don't affect the flavor or texture of oatmeal at all; they just add protein and other nutrients.

I do agree that tacos would be fun for breakfast. Maybe that's why the fast food establishments started carrying breakfast burritos. :o)

    3. Legend has it that breakfast burritos were invented here in Albuquerque, at the annual Balloon Fiesta. The balloon crews needed a breakfast that would be substantial yet portable, so somebody had the bright idea to put a full breakfast inside a tortilla. I don't know how true this is, but it's a good story. In any case, the "real" breakfast burritos served at the local restaurants definitely put the fast food ones to shame!

      Delete
    4. Do the kids have any cute little rhymes when learning how to spell Albuquerque like they do Mississippi?
But, I can imagine that would be a hard one to learn.

That is a neat story though! I would love to try a "real" break burrito one day.

What happens at the annual Balloon Fiesta? Sounds like something that Livi would love. Tonight, she was in her very first parade. She kept asking if there were going to be any balloons like at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. I think she had fun despite the absense of huge character balloons. :o)

      Delete
    5. I didn't grow up here, so I don't really know how the kids learn to spell Albuquerque. You're right, it must be challenging.

Balloon Fiesta is just masses of hot air balloons from all over the world. Traditional ones and special shapes, a mass ascension every morning for a week, and a balloon glow most evenings. The balloon glow happens after dark; the pilots light their gas jets while the balloons remain tethered to the ground, and the flames light them from inside. It's really neat. The prevailing winds around here the first week of October are especially good for ballooning, so that's when it happens.

      Delete
    6. Of fun!!! We saw some hot air balloons recently. They are a rare sight in these parts. Livi was outside screaming at the top of her lungs trying to wave and say hello to them. :o) It was amusing to watch. :o)

  14. I had two breakfasts, but I only ate one! First I grabbed a cup of yogurt and mixed some gelatin into it (good for my joints -- they're creaky already and I'm only 25), but as I was rushing out the door I forgot to pick it up again. So I ate a granola bar in the car. As for the yogurt, the dog got it before I got home.

  16. Jess, your too funny. Okay my breakfast was 2 cups of coffee and dry cereal at my desk at work. Not necessarily the best breakfast but that is usally what I have. Although I'd take pancakes or french toast every day for breakfast if I could.

  19. I started work at 4am this bright hot saturday morning so at 5am I had fresh hot donuts straight off the machine as I was cooking the first batch, then I made fresh espresso. At around 9:30 I then had cold poached eggs and cold fried bacon on cold toast with butter as I had to leave my breakfast and serve customers. On a normal week morning I have microwaved oatmeal at 5am.

    1. So you are doughnut maker? FUN!!! One of the doughnut shop around here let Livi go in the back and see the doughnut machines. She liked that!
This particular shop has so many different kinds of doughnuts, it's crazy!
I typically don't like the cake doughnuts, but they have Red Velvet that is really good. :o)

How does one go about poaching an egg?

      Delete
    2. I do mine in the microwave. Otherwise boiling water in a saucepan, when boiling stir the water into a whirlpool then carefully crack the egg into the centre, the swirling keeps the egg from spreading too much, when cooked remove with a slotted spoon,

      Delete
    3. Well, I must tell you, immediately after I read this, I went out and bought a carton of eggs and had poached eggs. I very much enjoyed them. So, thank you! <3

  20. A typical breakfast for me is usually two cups of coffee (sometimes more, sometimes less), a protein shake, and a waffle-no syrup (purely due to laziness, I do prefer mine covered in syrup; hate the extra dishes and it's faster to eat). I may have a granola or cereal bar if I don't have any waffles.

You don't like bacon?? That's just weird.

    ReplyDelete
  21. a protein shake, hmm? What brand?
Syrup is messy! My parents eat their waffles with syrup... SO STICKY!! yuck and then the waffle gets soggy, gross. lol
I have been told many many times that my not liking bacon is weird. I just really don't like the flavor though. I really don't like anything that tasted like it was smoked. And then I really don't like eating pork... and not for the regular reasons for not eating pork.
I used to develop pictures for a company around here.
So, one day I was developing these pictures and all I remember is there was this metal serving cart in an alley and on it was the carcass of a pig with an apple in its mouth. All you could really see was the head and the rest of the body had just been completely devoured. I guess it was a pit roasted pig, since it still had the head and everything on it. But that image and the extreme feeling of disgust is what I see when I think of bacon, or even ham.

    1. I tend to buy the "Body Fortress" brand, chocolate flavoured. It's from Walmart.

I completely understand why you don't eat pork products. That would be a shocking thing to see. I grew up on a farm, so this doesn't bother me as much. Actually, I think a lot of people go vegetarian after seeing something similar.

Have you ever had turkey bacon? It's still smokey flavoured, but without the pork.

    2. I have tried turkey bacon, but I didn't care for it either.

  22. Congratulations to Shannon.

I must be a very boring person, I have a piece of toast, with either a thin amount of butter or jam not both one or the other. Or I have a croissant with a little butter. Sunday morning because I know Vernon is cooking lunch I just have a cereal bar.
When on holiday we are both have a cooked breakfast, sausage , bacon, mushrooms, tomatoe, and scrambled egg for me, fired for vernon. I can't cook a fried egg and could not even eat it. I am funny with eggs I don't like the runny yokes, if an egg is not hard boiled I won't eat it. If I am in Europe I have what they call a continental breakfast, which is cheese, cooked eat, scrambled egg and whatever the hotel has on offer for the day.
I need something to eat in the morning or it upsets my stomach but I am not a breakfast lover unless on holiday.

  23. I know I said I wasn't entering in your thread draw, but I have to say that this is a fascinating 'conversation'! For the record, we usually eat oats porridge for breakfast, with milk and brown sugar, but this morning there was a power cut, so we just had coffee made on the gas ring and a cookie. I can make oats porridge on the gas, but it tends to burn unless it's watched carefully, so I couldn't be bothered.

Today I only had a cup of tea for breakfast. And I went out to teach my morning class... By the time I got back home at 11 am, I munched up a salad, as I was really hungry!

My usual breakfast is the cup of tea with either a muffin or a few cookies... Sometimes now that summer is coming, I will do a fruit smoothie instead, and in winter I may go with crêpes or toast if I have a bit of time. We are not into cooked breakfast here at all...

Also, crepe sound fabulous! We have a crepe maker around here and they are SOOO good! I like the pizza crepe or the chicken caesar crepe. I'm guessing y'alls crepes are different since you said no cooked breakfast. :o(

My usual smoothie is banana, milk, ice, sugar, and a few drops of coconut extract. However, I am trying to give up milk, so I have been playing around with milk-less smoothies, and banana just does not seem right. So, my current super favourite is apricot and strawberries, water, sugar or stevia and ice. Oh, apricots and cherries work great too. Yum!

I have the recipe to crêpes in my blog, I think. At least the carob variation. The normal one is the same, jsut sans carob ;o) I usually have them with jam - either lemon curd, orange jam (the kind with bits of peel, yum!), berries, or, the most favourite and super sweet, dulce de leche
